The 08/11/01 Rocky Mountain News writes:
Democratic challengers for U.S. Senate are nipping at Wayne Allard's heels, according to the latest Rocky Mountain News/News4 Poll.Allard would beat his only announced foe, Tom Strickland, by 42 percent to 37 percent, with the rest undecided, according to those polled.
Allard would beat his ONLY ANNOUNCED FOE!!!!
WHAT!?!?!?
Rick Stanley has filed with the Secretary of State and is working hard on his campaign.
On Tuesday, August 14, at the Adams Mark Hotel at 4 P.M. at the front entrance the TRT, Bob Glass, Rick Stanley and as many Libertarian volunteers as we can get will be there to protest Owens and the RMN.
Please bring a (large!) sign that reads:
RMN Lies About U.S. Senate Raceor:
Vote Stanley - Libertarian Party
The Rocky Mountain NewsBob Glass is organizing the TRT to embarass Owens. Rick Stanley and his entourage will be there.

I'll be there with my daughter. It's an opportunity for her to see the President of the U.S..
So, please come and tell your friends.
The Adam's Mark Hotel is at 1550 Court Place, in Denver. It's at the intersection of Court Place and 16th Street on the 16th Street Mall, 4 blocks from the Colorado Convention Center.
From I-25, take Colfax 1 1/2 miles to Court Place. Turn left onto Court Place.
Once again I am annoyed, disgusted and outraged with the Rocky Mountain News' blatantly erroneous coverage of the political scene in Colorado.
In Katie Kerwin McCrimmon's August 11th story "Poll: Allard show weakness", the blanket statement is made "[incumbent Senator Wayne] Allard would beat his only announced foe, Tom Strickland, by 42 percent to 37 percent..."
The fact of the matter is that Tom Strickland is NOT Wayne Allard's "only announced foe." On July 7th the Denver Post as well as the Associated Press reported that Libertarian Rick Stanley had announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. [Why did the News not report this story?]
As a longtime subscriber to the News and a card-carrying member of the Libertarian Party, the question I must pose to Ms. McCrimmon and your editorial staff is, why? Why does the Rocky Mountain News repeatedly distort the truth in your coverage of politics and political campaigns in Colorado?
And let's not forget the fact that last November the Rocky Mountain News consciously chose to exclude every single third party candidate from your so-called Election Guide, despite the fact that the Libertarian Party actually fielded MORE candidates than the Democratic Party.
If the News does not want to provide coverage of the Libertarian Party and its candidates, that's one issue, of course within your discretion under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. But to distort the truth and report blatantly incorrect news to your readers to accomplish your agenda is another issue entirely. I'd call it fraud.

Your August 11 story by Katie Kerwin McCrimmon ("Poll: Allard show weakness") states that Tom Strickland is the "only announced foe" of Senator Wayne Allard.
This is clearly false reporting, since there is at least one other announced candidate for Allard's office, namely Rick Stanley of the Libertarian Party.
I am curious to learn why the Rocky Mountain News makes such a determined effort to pretend that Libertarians do not exist. You folks must believe that the Libertarians are a threat to ideas that you hold dear. Your attitude is reminiscent of the refusal by Palestinians to utter the name of Israel, referring to it instead as "the Zionist entity".
Since you similarly abhor making reference to the word "Libertarians", let me suggest a euphemism that will allow you henceforth to report honestly about them. You can refer to Rick Stanley as the candidate of "the Anticollectivist entity".
Fair enough?

Curious. That's about the only word for it. The Rocky Mountain News is called a newspaper, yet managed to miss the news even with the Secretary of State's report in hand. Truly curious. On August 11th, the RM News reported that according to a recent poll, "Allard would beat his only announced foe, Tom Strickland, by 42 percent to 37 percent, with the rest undecided, according to those polled." This is VERY curious considering that on July 7th the Associated Press reported that Libertarian candidate Rick Stanley announced his candidacy, as well as filed with the CO Secretary of State. The only viable possibility for the News' omission (other than a blatant lie, or sheer incompetence) was that somehow the Secretary of State had misfiled the paperwork, but a simple phone call revealed that this was not the case. So we have a candidate from the Libertarian Party (the very same political party to run more candidates for the state legislature (82) in 2000 than the Democrats (79)) who has announced his candidacy a full month before Strickland not only not mentioned, but lied about by his very omission. Makes one wonder just whose agenda is being forwarded by the blatantly false statement, "only announced foe?" Wasn't the merger with the Denver Post supposed to give us better reporting, not worse - curious indeed?
