On Dec. 21, the United States government raised the national threat level from an Elevated risk to a High risk of terrorist attack (i.e. from Code Yellow to Code Orange).
In his remarks about the increased terrorist threat level, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said that the indicators of potential terror attacks on the American homeland during the holiday season are "perhaps greater now than at any point since Sept. 11, 2001." This increase in the threat level and the remarks from Secretary Ridge should serve as a reminder to every American that we are no safer now against terrorist attacks – even after launching a pre-emptive war against Iraq, even after capturing Saddam Hussein, and even after trading our precious liberties for "safety" via the atrocious USA PATRIOT Act.
